The legislation was approved by the Senate in May and the Assembly in June by strong majorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/02\/realestate\/racial-bias-home-appraisals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">growing body of research<\/a>&nbsp;has documented how frequently racial bias can skew home appraisals, with Black homeowners most likely to be deprived of their earned equity.&nbsp;More than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/18\/realestate\/housing-discrimination-maryland.html#:~:text=More%20than%2097%20percent%20of,discrimination%20in%20the%20home%20valuations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">97% of home appraisers<\/a>&nbsp;are white, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHolding appraisers accountable for discrimination is one of the ways we must address New Jersey\u2019s racial wealth gap,\u201d said Adam Gordon, executive director at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/fairsharehousing.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fair Share Housing Center<\/a>. \u201cFor most homeowners, their house is their most valuable asset. Appraisal bias has been robbing Black and Latino families of hard-won equity for decades. We\u2019re grateful to the bill&#8217;s sponsors and Acting Governor Way for their leadership in taking this step toward repairing the multi-generational harms wreaked by appraisal bias.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation\u2019s primary sponsors are Senator Nellie Pou, Senate Majority Leader Teresa M. Ruiz, Deputy Assembly Speaker Yvonne Lopez, Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and Assemblywoman Tennille R.
